More from United RenderWorks

So great news, I received a 50% scholarship to the animation school and so I believe I am on my way. I'll be starting in  March, right after I get back from China.

Life is crazy but it is still fun and pushing forward, saying that I have a few more fun illustrations that I've done for the Rendering Group. I'll post my favorites:

Inktober and Illustration Friday- Entagled

So I thought I would hit two birds with one stone. I kept seeing these posts about inktober from a few of my friends and I thought it was a great idea, also I haven't participated with Illustration Friday in a while so I thought to do both at the same time.

With inktober, I have to create a new ink drawing daily during the month of October, a little late but it will be fun for at least the next week and a half. So here I go.

United Renderworks - First few jobs

So about a few months ago I started working for an Architectural rendering group where I am given a CAD file and I have to make it look like it was either hand painted or something along those lines to create a better aesthetic feel. The images are later used by architects or building crews to market their business at construction sites. Its been fun so far.

So here are a few of my first few jobs:

Little red riding hood

Sometimes we just have to paint, and to welcome in the Halloween spirit. I got the idea yesterday and I also wanted to give a try at going straight digital. I think it might be a little too mushy but it was fun, I miss the line work though. It was a fun study though and worth the effort.

VFS Video... and possible future school?

Well, I have great news. Out of much consideration and thought. I applied for the Vancouver Film School's One-year Animation program. I wasn't sure if I could get in; but happy day I DID!!!

Then I was sent the tuition fee for the school and I about fainted. I figured I could just learn on my own with some good animation books but I would totally miss out on the networking and hopefully foot in the market if I don't go.

After voicing my concern with my admissions adviser she told me about the full-tuition scholarship that I could apply for.

Basically we have to choose one line from this Manifesto:

And then create a 90 second video that is inspired from that line. The early-bird deadline is the 15th of September and the final deadline is in October.

Well, I was told about the deadlines about 5 days before the early bird one was due. And at first I thought I couldn't make it to the first one, I didn't have any idea what I would submit or anything. I again talked to my admissions adviser about three days before the 1st deadline and she told me about how I can do anything I want and she was really looking forward to seeing what I create and that I should really try for the early bird deadline. And so I got the crazy idea that it wouldn't hurt to try for it. Mind you, it is two days till the deadline.

So I picked one story that I've been wanting to create and tweeked it to be applicable and I am proud to say I did it. I didn't sleep and I got work off and barely ate, and I am pretty sure I need a shower but it is finished and beautiful.

I hope you all enjoy and please vote for me cause I would like to get the scholarship, if not I will have to find something else to do.

Here is my videa:

Rachel's Baby Shower invites

So, as a gift to one of my friend's baby shower, I did the invites and here is what it looked like. I thought it turned out well and it didn't take too long to do. Sadly, it printed a little green but the evening was a blast and it was just fun to provide some service.

Harry Potter Room

So right when I got home from Korea, my parents were in the middle of finishing their Lodge by the lake. They asked me to do a mural embodying the world of Harry Potter, under the stairs for the the grand kids to enjoy. More specifically this room:

So This is the entrance to the room, it is small so no adult will mistake it for their room.

The space is just a crawl space under the main staircase, with the ceiling slanting down till it dissappears into the floor.
And my mother had found this really cool light at an estate sale. The light is originally used for ships but it fits perfectly with the room.

So I got this whole room to paint and with just the mention of the fact that they want the Harry potter castle in it. And I just thought I would also include all the stories that I have grown to love through the years.
So, I started painting the sky, making sure to have lots of clouds and I decided to paint the receding side of the room dark as though the area is cursed with night.
Then, I discovered that chalk is a great medium to use to drawout the areas that I wanted to paint, especially when planning out where I wanted certain parts of the room.
After plotting out the mountains and castles, I started painting and blocking in the major themes of the room. I tried to keep the background really cool (temperature) so that it will stay in the background, but the half dome turn out looking like an iceberg, so I had to warm it up a little.
So after the background was finished I added the foreground and that includes paradise falls from Up. Adventure is out there. I also finished the lamp post that was inspired from Narnia. And what is a Harry Potter castle without the enchanted lake in the foreground, that and since we are at our lake place there should likewise be a lake in the mural.

I also finished the background of the far-wall and along with the foreground elements. The mountain in the background is Mt. Spokane, Then I added the lone tree, it represents the whomping willow even though it is not a willow, and it isn't violent.... sorry.

The following trip up I finished the entrance to the room, I made it like the kids or whoever enters are leaving the cabin behind and entering the fantasy world. The small wall above represents the real world and that is where I will paint the animals of the 'real' world.
Then I also had to fill in the dead zone area, this is the land as it falls into the eternal night area. So there will be a lot of dead trees and basic mysterious foggy areas.

I wanted to finish most of the room for the weekend where my nieces and nephews were coming into town so that I could have something to surprise them and also have them to also leave their hand prints on the wall. Just another way, that the kiddies can claim the area as their own, like a tree house.

And finally, after a few months of work I finished with the background and added the character to have a finished and beautifully inspiring Harry Potter world.
On the picture above, I added Firekrag the dragon chained to a tree to guard against any baddies coming from the eternal night land. Then also there is a little Tinkerbell flying above and also if you look close, there is a little Totoro playing a flute in the tree.
This is the main wall and has the most characters as well. In the background is the house from Up, along with the balloons, in the lake there is the little mermaid and the lockness monster. Then on the right side is a unicorn from the Last Unicorn, along with the forest creatures saying goodbye to her as she leaves to find her own kind. And watching over all of the land is the pegasis.
The castle probably took the longest to paint but it was totally worth the headache trying to get it in the right perspective and lighting. I think it turned out amazing and since it is the main focal point of the whole room I am happy how it turned out.
Also for all the princesses lovers out there, I included Rapunzel in one of the towers as she waits for someone to come and get her.
Here is the lamp and entrance and labeled and finished, it looked so great without the plastic, I also included a mouse and mouse hole by the door. Cute little details :)
Then I painted the moose and eagle, this was to match the theme of the cabin, which was wilderness and rustic forest.
And finally, For the etarnal light area, I put in my favorite constellations, which are: Orion, the big dipper, draco, the hydra, and casiopia.

Then when everything was painted and finished. I painted stars all over the ceiling in glow-in-the-dark paint so that when the light are off the kids can still enjoy it. With the light on you don't notice anything there, so it is like an awesome surprise.

It was surprisingly fun doing this project and I am really happy at the results. I am eager to see the excitement in everyone's faces as they crawl into the room and enjoy the world of Stories.

Brother's Marriage Present

So my brother got married last weekend, and this was the present that I did for him. It was all digital, but originally I penciled in the drawing and then later painted it and inked it digitally. It looked great on the computer and then when I printed it... it was fine really, but under some select lighting it looks more green. Weird! But everything turned out great and the wedding went perfectly.

Congrats Brother!

Jet's B-day Gift

So my niece's birthday party was this last weekend and one of her gifts was the American Girl Doll, Kaya. The doll is a Nez Pierce Indian and I thought it would be cool to give her something that would match her doll.
We had this old cradle down in the basement that I decided to repaint and give to her. The design was originally going to focus on the Nez Pierce art but then I looked up Indians of the North West; and found the Inuit's paintings. I thought that the designs were super awesome and so that is what I went for. So here are the finished products:

IF: Wool

I teach english in Korea and so I often get inspired by my students and the culture here. This week's theme seemed a little dull to me at first. What would be fun drawing wool, or sheep for that matter. Then while teaching my students discovered the word rainbow and started labeling everything 'rainbow'. So I decided to take that as a sign and have at least one rainbow sheep amongst the other white sheep that I would create. And hey why not be proud of being different.

I might of gone a little overboard with the colors but I was having fun with the intense saturation, but it is a little of an eye sore, oh well that is what I was going for.

enjoy :)

IF: Storm

Happy Valentines... or how I would like to call it Happy Singles Awareness Day, everyone. This piece was a lot of fun and when I first started conceptualizing about it I didn't think it would come out this... depressing.. but voila life.

I wanted to do a piece for the holiday but I had to tie it in with this week's theme and putting one and one together was interesting. The colors were fun to combine along with having them painted and strewn about and I think I ended up where it needed to be. Stormy but pink.

Enjoy, and have a great Valentines Day.

Finale, Shades of Yellow

Well, this is the last page of the 22 pager that I wanted to create while I was living in South Korea. It was fun playing around with the paper but I am not sure I'm going to do another comic like this one. Maybe we shall see.

I hope everyone enjoyed :)
